Summer Football Competition!

What's the craic readers!

My old pal Angus Martin is organising a football competition involving current and present Trinity College footballers which will take place this Saturday 2 August at Trinity & All Saints College.  My good self will in charge of organising Trinity’s team.  Angus sent me the following details:

The first game will start at 2pm, so please can you be at TASC no later than 1.15pm to get changed and warmed-up etc, I’ll be up there from about 12.30pm getting things organised. We have access to the outdoor changing rooms and the games will all be played on the top pitch.

Weather forecast isn’t great (rain), but it is likely to still be warm so please make sure you bring a water bottle as there won’t be any provided. Unlikely to be any first-aid provision either so don’t get injured!

After a FIFA-like farcical (but very fair!) draw the order of play is as follows:

Team A – TASC OLD BOYS (LEEDS)
Team B – TASC OLD BOYS (NON-LEEDS)
Team C – TRINITY OLD BOYS FC
Team D – TRINITY FITNESS

Game 1 @ 2pm – A v B
Game 2 @ 2.30pm – C v D
Game 3 @ 3pm – A v C
Game 4 @ 3.30pm – B v D
Game 5 @ 4pm – A v D
Game 6 @ 4.30pm – B v C

All games will be 2 halves of 15 minutes with a very quick turn-around between games. Rolling subs are allowed, just notify the referee.

3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. If teams are tied at the end of all of the games, then the winner will be decided on goal difference, if it is still level after this then the winner will be the team that has scored most goals in the tournament. If teams are somehow still tied after all this then the winner will be decided by a normal penalty shoot-out.

We have a referee and 2 linesmen for each game so it should for once be possible to actually attempt to play off-side with a degree of skill rather than the usual hold your hand up and hope attempts!

If you could all please give £5 to your captain prior to the games starting as the costs of the tournament are quite high and we need to pay the referees on the day. Team captains are Richard Lambert (A), Steve Jones (B), Gareth Curran (C) and Paddy Muir (D).

There is a trophy for the winning team and Bar 62 are also putting on a few alcoholic prizes for the player of the tournament and the top scorer. After the games are finished and people are showered and changed we will be heading to the Old Ball for a few beers and some food before making our way to Bar 62 on Town Street for around 7pm. The plan is then to spend a few hours there before making our way to the Oak in Headingley. After that I am sure it will end up being a free for all!

Text me at Trinity FC Online if you are interested in playing or you just want to know more details.

Football Fitness

... the exciting column where your fitness questions are answered by Trinity's Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney

This week's question comes from Gaz.  He writes:

'I play for a Saturday team in the Yorkshire Old Boys' League. I was wondering what I should do fitness wise over the summer.  I read somewhere that professional footballers in the 1970s used to do b*gger all apart from getting p*ssed all summer.  When pre-season training began they used to arrive two stone over weight but they just trained hard to work it off.  If it was good enough for Marshy, Besty and all the other players whose names ending in "y" then is it good for me? '

Training regimes have moved on from the 1970s in the professional game.  Fitness, as well as diet, is regarded as being very important.  If you want to train like the modern day professional you need to try to maintain your fitness over the summer.  Try going for a five mile run once a week as well as visiting your local gym for a weights session.  Have a drink by all means but try to do it in moderation.

If you've got any fitness questions e-mail Trinity FC Online now!
