Football Fitness

... the exciting column where your fitness questions are answered by Trinity's Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney

This week's question comes from Bernard Shepherd from Baildon.  He writes:

'I'm getting on a bit in football terms and am losing the motivation to do the training that I used to do to keep myself fit enough for a football game on Saturday.  I want to stay fit but don't want to spend time doing long runs.  What do you recommend?'

It's all about training smarter rather than longer Bernard.  Why don't you try interval training.  Try running at three quarter pace for one minute, then rest for one minute.  Repeat this ten times so that you have ran a total of ten minutes.  You will be able to increase the pace the more times you repeat this session.  Running at a faster pace than you would do for a longer run is more likely to replicate the pace you would run at when playing a football game, hence you are training smarter.
