Worthington Cup Review 2009/10

As ever the setting for this annual event was the Pack Horse, with seventeen participants all vying to win the tenth Worthington Cup.
Preliminary Round
Highlights

With seventeen entrants a preliminary round took place, consisting of one tie.  Anthony Higo came out on top against Ian Duggleby, though the performance didn't scare any of the tournament favourites.

First Round

Highlights

Andrew McAulay started the round with an easy victory over his close chum Graham Fox.  Last year's champion Mark Ryan also had an easy passage to the quarter final, with a convincing victory over Ryan O'Donnell.  Last year's losing finalist Lee Field beat John Hobbs, who performed well with his two half-pint strategy.  However the tie of the round was undoubtedly between tournament administrator Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney and tournament favourite Angus Martin.  Many observers suggested that the winner of this tie would win the tournament.  Martin, eager to win back his crown, performed at his best to win by the narrowest of margins.

Quarter Finals

Highlights

Favourite and four times Worthington Cup winner Angus Martin was drawn against last year's champion and second favourite Mark Ryan in a repeat of last year's quarter final.  Last year it went to the judge's decision, with Ryan being awarded victory due to excess spillage on the part of Martin.  This year Martin ensured the all the beer went down his throat, rather than his shirt, and gained his revenge to progress to the semi-finals though Ryan pushed him all the way.  Colin Buckle and Lee Field both registered convincing victories to progress to the last four.  Andrew McAulay beat Robbie Pearson in a close tie.

Results:

Colin Buckle bt Chris Gardiner
Angus Martin bt Mark Ryan
