Worthington Cup Review 2007/08

A record number of entrants took part in this year's Worthington Cup, Trinity's annual drinking competition, which took place in December 2007.  The luxurious Pack Horse location was again the setting for twenty-one thirsty competitors.
Preliminary Round
Highlights

Event organiser Gareth Curran was drawn against event administrator Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney, leaving the burning question 'who would officiate it?'  It didn't really matter as Mullowney cruised to an easy victory over his slow sipping rival.  Last year's victor Lee 'Spice Boy' Field had no problem in disposing of Mughal.  Tournament debutant Colin Buckle beat John Hobbs, who was still persisting with his two halves technique.  Higgins won his first ever Worthington cup tie, beating Stevie Travers.  In the closest tie of the round Paul 'Jonesy' Jones edged past tournament debutant Pete Compton.

Result

Colin Buckle bt John Hobbs
Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney bt Gareth Curran
Lee Field bt Imran Mughal
Neil Higgins bt Stevie Travers
Paul 'Jonesy' Jones bt Pete Compton

First Round

Highlights

Favoutite Angus Martin started his campaign with a convincing victory over Robbie Pearson.  Richard Lambert proved too strong for Neil Higgins.  Mark Ryan and Martin O'Keeffe were both in top form, beating Tom Priestley and Chris Chris Gardiner respectively.  Last year's beaten finalist Jamie Connolly had too much class for Colin Buckle, while Tom Marston impressed in his close victory over Jimmy Yates.  Holder Lee Field kept up the defence of his title with victory over debutant Paul Wray.  Undoubtedly the tie of the round was between tournament administrator Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney and the well fancied Paul 'Jonesy' Jones. An early spillage by Jones handed the initiative to Mullowney who made no mistake in sealing a comprehensive victory over his big armed rival.

Results:

Angus Martin bt Robbie Pearson
Richard Lambert bt Neil Higgins
Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney bt
Paul 'Jonesy' Jones
Mark Ryan bt Tom Priestley
Jamie Connolly bt Colin Buckle
Martin O'Keeffe bt Chris Gardiner
Lee Field bt Paul Wray
Tom Marston bt Jimmy Yates

Quarter Finals

Highlights

Favourite Angus Martin was drawn against holder Lee Field and what a thrilling encounter it proved to be.  Field pushed Martin to the limit in a brave defence of his title, but Martin managed to edge through to the semi-finals.  Martin O'Keeffe managed to squeeze past last year's beaten finalist Jamie Connolly in another quality tie.  Tom Marston, despite performing well, never looked in danger of defeating the impressive Mark Ryan.  Richard Lambert, with the benefit of downing one less pint than his rival, just managed to beat the brave tournament administrator Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney.

Results:

Martin O'Keeffe bt Jamie Connolly
Angus Martin bt Lee Field
Richard Lambert bt Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney
Mark Ryan bt Tom Marston

Semi Finals

Highlights

Despite Martin O'Keeffe's provocative tactics Angus Martin cruised into the final, with a typically impressive display.  Mark Ryan was equally as impressive outclassing Richard Lambert and looking like a genuine title challenger, to set up a rematch of the 2004/05 final.

Results:

Angus Martin bt Martin O'Keeffe
Mark Ryan bt Richard Lambert

Final

Highlights

After pre-final entertainment provided by Mike Somers, who downed a pint while being prodded with a pool cue and being slightly sick in the process, the main event commenced.  Mark Ryan pushed favourite Angus Martin all the way, to the extent that administrator Jim 'Mullers' Mullowney was required to make an official judgement.  Though there was slight spillage on the part of Martin it was deemed minor to the result and as he touched his empty glass down a fraction of a second before Ryan he was awarded the decision.

Result:

Angus Martin bt Mark Ryan
